The absolute value of a number is how far it is from zero.
It is abbreviated to |x| .
So |3| = 3 , but |−5 | = 5 .

The absolute value |x| of a real number x can be found by applying these rules:
- if x > = 0, then |x|=x
- if x < 0, then |x|=−x.
