Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier (1768-1830) was a French mathematician, remembered for various pieces of mathematics which are named after him, including the trigonometric series called Fourier series. He also did important work on the theory of heat, and was involved in politics during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars.
