For a given dynamical system, described by generalised coordinates qi and generalised momenta pi, the Hamiltonian is H = ∑pi [(q)\dot]i − L , where L is the Lagrangian of the system, and [(q)\dot] is the derivative of q with respect to time.
(pi are given by pi = [(∂L)/(∂[(q)\dot]i)] . )
If L does not depend explicitly on time, then H is the total energy of the system.
