Definition (keystage 2)
The lowest amount, the least total, the smallest value, the smallest size, the most shallow .... The least of something. The opposite of maximum.
Definition (keystage 3)
The smallest value of a function; the lowest point on a graph. Often we talk about a local minimum, i.e. the lowest point in a particular region of a graph.
Definition (advanced level)
A point where a function has its smallest value. For a function of one variable, a stationary point may be identified as a local minimum if the second derivative is positive at that point. For a function of more than one variable it is a stationary point where the slope of the function is positive in every direction.
