Definition (keystage 1)
Adrien-Marie Legendre (1752-1833): A French mathematician, remembered mainly for the Legendre symbol and Legendre functions which bear his name.
He studied the paths of projectiles, number theory, elliptic functions, beta and gamma functions, and wrote on elementary geometry and on triangulation, and the orbits of comets. He was on the first committee to work on the definitions of the metric system of measurement.
