Definition (keystage 2)
The area of a surface is a measure of how large it is.
Description (keystage 2)
It is often not possible to cover a shape with an exactly fitting tiling of squares, and so many mathematical techniques have had to be devised to calculate areas exactly.
Definition (keystage 3)
The area of a surface is a measure of how large it is. The area is the number of unit squares that are needed to cover the surface. Area has dimensions L2, and SI unit m2.
Description (advanced level)
It is often not possible to cover a shape with an exactly fitting tiling of squares, and so many mathematical techniques have had to be devised to calculate areas exactly. Integral calculus is very helpful in this respect. Some shapes - such as the Mandelbrot set - are so complex that it is very difficult to calculate their area, or - in some cases - even define what we mean by their area.
