Andrei Andreyevich Markov (1856-1922): Russian mathematician. He is most often remembered for Markov chains and Markov processes which bear his name. His earlier work was in number theory, continued fractions, series and limits. He applied the theory of continued fractions to probability, founding the study of stochastic processes.
