i, how widely different is the collected data (the range);
ii, what is typical about the data (the average, the most common result).

The study of the ways that large amounts of data can be represented using a few numbers; the study of how such numbers can be chosen, related to one another and used to make reasonable predictions and come to sensible conclusions about the data, and about the situation that the data are taken from.
