Multiplication  |  Multiply   (English)

Definition (keystage 1)

Adding a quantity to itself a certain number of times. We can use the x sign to show multiplication.
For example, 3 x 2, or 3 multiplied by 2, is three lots of two (2 + 2 + 2), or two lots of three (3 + 3).

Definition (keystage 2)

The process of adding a quantity to itself a certain number of times. It is the inverse of division.
The multiplication, 5 ×4, can mean either five lots of four (4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4) or five added four times (5 + 5 + 5 + 5).
Multiplication is both commutative and associative.

Definition (advanced level)

An associative and commutative binary operation, distributive over addition, which takes any two elements of one of the sets N,Z,Q,R,C , a and b, to another element of that set, ab, called their product.
